I was born in the 80’s and grew up in the 90’s when thin eyebrows were the thing. And boy did I follow that trend hard! I plucked and plucked my eyebrows until they were almost nonexistent! I’ll spare you the agony of seeing pictures from that time. I plucked them so much so that they won’t even grow back in certain spots anymore. I can’t tell you how much I hated them as I got older. So I started coloring them in, which led to never being seen in public without makeup, never swimming because I didn’t want people to see my eyebrows washed away and always carrying makeup with me so I could touch them up if needed. Heaven forbid I ever touch them and have eyebrows smeared all over my face! (shudder)
I looked into so many options (seriously I was desperate) Did you know, they can do a transplant from the hair on your head to your eyebrows? But I really didn’t want to do that. It sounded painful and expensive. They can also do eyebrow extensions, like lash extensions but again, it didn’t sound like something that would work for me. Not to mention I tried every makeup under the sun!
About 2 years ago, I was scrolling though Instagram one Friday night while getting ready for bed, I noticed a post from a girl who had just gotten permanent eyebrows (microblading/powder fill). I think this was at about midnight and I kid you not, I stayed up for hours scouring the internet for info about it and looking through so many Instagram at before and afters. I was SOLD! The next morning I asked my husband what he thought. My birthday was coming up and he said “early birthday present?” UM..YES PLEASE! Best birthday present ever!! Literally that same day I called an had an appointment for Monday.
I went in, filled out some paperwork and got numb. Then she drew me a new brow shape and plucked out all of the hairs that weren’t in the lines. I had some seriously weird shaped eyebrows so there was a lot of plucking. I was so excited and so nervous. I don’t like pain (who does) but I really didn’t care. It was so worth it to me. She showed me some different color options and found one that would work for my skin tone and hair color.
Then she got to work. I did the powder fill which is more of a solid brow vs. microblading which looks like little individual hairs drawn on. It is about an hour process. Some spots you can hardly feel and some hurt like crazy, even being numbed beforehand. She switches back and forth between both brows so at least you get a little relief on each side while she’s working on the other.
After about an hour I was done. I was thrilled! They looked so amazing and I couldn’t quit staring at them! I even went to the gym the next day without makeup just because I could.
Here is my before and after of my first session. HUGE difference right? I told you I had super weird eyebrows.
After you get them done they have to heal. You can’t touch them for a week but with powderfill I could still get them wet just not rub them or get soap on them. I had an ointment my brow girl gave me to put on every night. They are pretty dark and feel pretty stiff for about about a week. Then the color starts to flake off. You can’t pick them or you risk pulling out the color, so you just have to let them naturally flake away. When they start to flake off, the color looks a little lighter and you may freak out a bit thinking that all of the color is gone. It’s not! And when they heal they look like a beautiful natural brow.
We took our kids to Hawaii a few weeks later and it was so awesome not having to worry about doing brow makeup at all. And swimming without worrying about my eyebrows at all!
About 4 weeks after the first appointment, you go in for a touchup appointment. The procedure is done the same way but it takes less time and she just really works to fill in any spots that need it and do an overall touchup as well. Then you go in about a once a year to get them touched up.
I had a yearly touch up last year and just went in again last week for my yearly appointment. This time I had a full micro blade which is different than the powderfill which I had originally done. My brows had faded quite a bit and I was to the point of filling them in everyday. I went to a different girl this time because she was one of my best friends from high school and works at a salon 5 minutes from my house! The other girl was about an hour away and even though I loved her and she did a great job, my time is valuable. So win win! Not only did I get to catch up with my friend, but I only had to drive 5 minutes 🙂
The microblading hurts significantly less than the powder fill. Don’t think there’s no pain at all because there still is, but much less. The aftercare for microblading is different too. You can’t get them wet at all for a week. And no sweat or dirt can enter your brows which means, no mountain biking or super sweaty workouts (I don’t sweat so my workouts have stayed the same). But have you ever tried to wash your makeup off without getting your eyebrows wet? It’s impossible! If anyone has any tips for me, I would love them because every day I have gotten soap in my eyes and it hurts like crazy! haha!!
The top left picture is what they looked like before my latest appointment. I still have the base there but they were so faded. And after! Don’t they look so pretty?!
If you have any thoughts of wanting to get your eyebrows microbladed or powder filled, I recommend it hands down 100%! Eyebrows are such an important frame for your eyes and I feel so pretty with these good ones 🙂 I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!
