17 Amazing things that happen to your body when you diet

The last blog post I did I talked about some of the hard things about dieting. (Click here to read post) But I think we can all agree that as hard as dieting can be, the good far out weighs the bad!

The point of this post today is to tell you all of the amazing things that happen to your body when you start taking care of yourself and lose unwanted fat!  Nutrition is almost everything when it comes to weight loss.  I am sure you’ve heard the term “you can’t out exercise a bad diet.”  It’s SO true!

Not only is nutrition important for weight loss, it’s also important for so many aspects of our lives..  we are in fact, what we eat, and if we eat noting but junk food, you’re going to feel like junk.  Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a time and place for any kind of food in your life but everything in moderation.  I eat 90% whole nutritious food and about 10% not so much.  If I ate potato chips and chocolate all day, there would be no way I would hit my protein goals and stay within my carb and fat goals. I would feel terrible and tired and my workouts would be awful.  So make sure you are making good decisions and hitting your macros so you can fit in that cookie or chips if you want!

Here is a list of all of the AMAZING things you will see happen to your body when you start to eat more nutritious food and drop that unwanted body fat!

1. You’ll have more energy

When you start to lose weight, it takes your body less energy to perform every day tasks and in return, leaves you with more energy to spare!  Not to mention, when you start eating healthier, more nutritious foods, you’ll avoid some of the sugar crashes you normally experience in the middle of the day.

2. You will lose weight

Not everyone has a goal to lose weight but I would guarantee if you’re reading this blog, you do.  Weight loss is calories in vs. calories out.  You certainly can overeat on nutritious foods but if you’re tracking your macros, you’re going to know exactly where you are at in terms of calories every day.  Add in some exercise on top of that and you’ll start seeing some weight loss in no time!  But if the scale doesn’t budge, that doesn’t mean change isn’t happening. You very well could be putting on muscle or a million other reasons why the scale doesn’t move and can be so frustrating.  Just don’t use it as your own means of tracking progress and you’ll see changes for sure!

3.Your skin will glow

When you start eating more nutritious foods, your skin will thank you.  Your acne and blemishes will clear up and all of the vitamins and minerals from the food you’re eating will help your skin look radiant and glowing.  The nutrients in your food will also help speed up repair and growth of new skin.  And if you incorporate lots of water into your diet, you’re skin will look young and refreshed!

4. More mental clarity and be more productive

The World Health Organization states that “adequate nutrition can raise your productivity levels by 20 percent on average.”  More nutritious foods equals more energy and mental clarity.  The food you eat directly impacts your ability to perform tasks and how well your brain functions.  Little tasks will be easier to do and no more afternoon sugar crashes to get in the way!  Have you ever eaten a really heavy meal and all you want to do is go take a nap?  I know I have!  Eat healthy nutritious foods throughout your day and you’ll be able to concentrate more and be more productive!

5. You’ll sleep better

When you lose weight, you will find it easier to fall and stay asleep at night.  Sleep is critical for recovery and repair.  Sleep is critical for a healthy functioning body and eating well, exercising and taking care of our bodies is critical for a good night’s sleep. It is kind of a vicious cycle.  But trust me on this one, start taking care of yourself and your sleep will improve.  Start sleeping better and you’ll feel amazing! The University of Pennsylvania did a study in 2014 and found that people who lost 5% of their body weight over a 6 month period, slept an average of 22 minutes longer each night. 

6. You will be less bloated

I am one of those people who has a sensitive stomach.  If I eat too much, if I take a nap, if I don’t carefully watch what I eat, if I go on vacation and don’t track, I get extremely bloated and uncomfortable. (Yes, I did say take a nap.  If I take a nap, I wake up feeling awful!  Weird right! Leave me a comment below and tell me if you have this problem too and what you’ve done about it.)    I have to be careful with what I eat and how much.  So tracking what I eat has been a huge blessing to me.  I feel normal and not like my stomach is in knots all the time.  Especially if you’re making sure to get nutritious foods in each day, you’ll have less bloating from processed foods and high sodium intake.

7. You’ll be happier

I can’t say that I am a happier person since losing weight.  I can’t say that my life wasn’t amazing before I lose weight, because it was. But I can say I am so much happier and more proud of myself than I ever have been.  I am not a better mom or wife.  I am not a better person overall but I am happier with where I am in life.  I talk to myself with love now instead of negativity.  I am proud of myself for trying my best and sticking with something.  And while I am not yet where I want to be, but I am so happy that I am where I am!

8. You will have to buy a whole new wardrobe

I dropped about two shirt sizes and one pant size when I lost weight.  (My bottom doesn’t like to lose weight as fast as my top) Nothing fit and I HAD TO go buy new clothes.  I got a whole new wardrobe and I loved it!  Unless you hate to shop then this could be a real bummer.  Haha!  I love to shop so I was in heaven!  I got to go buy new clothes that I loved and felt good in and completely revamped my wardrobe! I got rid of all of the clothes that didn’t fit anymore and it was so freeing!

9.You will get a lot of compliments

It might take some time for people to notice the changes you’re making but when they do, be prepared for people to tell you!  And ask you how you did it.  And ask for advice. That is actually the whole reason I started this blog because so many people asked me how I did it and I wanted to have all the info in one place for people to go to!

10. Your family will eat better too

Lead by example.  If you start to take care of yourself, your family will see how amazing you look and feel and they’ll want that for themselves.  Plus if you’re the one who does the majority of the cooking, they’ll eat healthier by default.

11. Stronger immune system and disease prevention

Its simple.  Nutritious foods, high in vitamins and minerals, boost your immune system and help you avoid illnesses.  Getting more nutrients into your diet, reduces the risk of illness and disease.  Losing weight can even help reduce the risk of some diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.  If you already have an illness or disease, losing weight can help reduce your symptoms and maybe even allow you to get off some medications. But make sure you talk to your doctor before you stop taking medication!

I don’t know about you, but those reasons alone are enough from me to keep going.

12.Reduced Pain

When you are over weight, you put a log of strain and pressure on your joints.  You may feel pain just doing everyday tasks.  With less weight to carry around, your joints will have less to carry and the inflammation from the strain on your joints will decrease!

13.More Confidence

You won’t feel the need to hide your body, or fold your arms over your stomach anymore.  You’ll be able to go out with friends or family and feel good and comfortable in any situation.  Your mind will be on the fun time your having instead of wondering what people are thinking of you.  You’ll be more confident around others and not in a showy or egotistical way, just in the way people are meant to feel….good about themselves.

14.You’ll feel good in (and out of) clothes 

I always wanted to feel good and comfortable in clothes.  I know that might sound crazy but I love clothes and wanted to feel cute, fashionable and comfortable.  I hated the feeling of always having to adjust my clothes because I was uncomfortable in them.  I remember the day I put on a cute outfit and thought I finally looked good and felt confident in clothes!  That was a very rewarding victory for me!  And of course looking and feeling good without anything on is always a plus too!

15.You’ll like being in pictures and looking in the mirror

If you’re anything like I was, I hated being in pictures!  I would position myself behind one of my kids so you couldn’t see my whole body helping me to appear thinner.  I didn’t love looking in the mirror and when I did, I would pick myself apart.  But once you start to take care of yourself and shed the weight, you will love walking by mirrors and checking yourself out.  You’ll be ok being in pictures and in fact, you may even start to like it!  Because after all, what better way to notice progress than in pictures 🙂

I want to add that you should love yourself at any weight or size and should never talk negatively about yourself or pick yourself apart. But I also have been unhappy with my appearance before and totally understand that you might not always love your body.

16.  You’ll be able to participate in activities you couldn’t before

You will no longer have to skip a hike with your kids because you couldn’t do it.  You can feel confident going to the pool in a swimming suit.  You will be able to do so many things that you’ve been holding yourself back from for so long because you couldn’t do it, or were afraid you couldn’t.  No more of that!  Take control of your life and LIVE!

17.You’ll live longer

I think we can all agree that this is one of the most important parts of healthy eating and weight loss.  Sure, it’s nice to feel confident and want to be in pictures.  And its awesome to get compliments from people on your hard work, but we ALL want to live a long healthy life free from illness and disease.  To see our kids and grandkids grow up and to be able to live a full life.

  1. It can be so hard to take that first step, and then to stick with it in the first week or two, but I love that it gets easier and you feel SO much better! This list is so true! I never regret taking good care of my health!

  2. Would love to have better skin and just be healthier. The other stuff are all added bonuses. I hate the word diet but this makes me want too. Thanks for the inspiration

    1. Thank you for your comment! I actually hate the word diet too because really this is a lifestyle change. And for that reason, I changed the title of the post from diet to eating healthy. Makes me feel much better 🙂

  3. This is a great list. I am enjoying some of these benefits because I had gastric sleeve surgery a year and a half ago. It’s still a struggle for me. I gave up surgary drinks, and that has helped a lot. The surgery doesn’t just fix everything; you have to follow the rules. I am still working on getting down to my goal weight. But, my blood pressure is now normal, and my cholesterol is good. I am more confident. I still need to work, but I am getting there. Thanks for the motivation today!
